California officials say they are getting the upper hand on what has become the worst siege of wildfires since the state began keeping records. Firefighters have contained nearly 1,500 of 1,781 wildfires that have broken out across the tinder-dry state since thunderstorms June 20 brought fire-starting lightning. The fires have consumed almost 840,000 acres in national forests as well as state, private and local land. ![]() Okmok Volcano, in Alaskas Aleutian Islands, released a continuous plume of ash and steam in early July 2008. According to the Alaska Volcano Observatory, the eruption began at 11:43 a.m. ADT on July 12, releasing an ash cloud some 30,000 to 35,000 feet above sea level. Comprising the northeast end of Umnak Island, Okmok is a shield volcano with a low, broad shape that resembles an ancient warrior shield. The volcano is 22 miles wide, and has two 6-mile wide overlapping calderas from ancient eruptions. Eruptions have been recorded at Okmok since 1805. The Aleutian Islands are located in the Ring of Fire.
